The book is soft back and landscape style. It seems easy to follow and read. I know a little piano but I feel it is more for a teacher and his/her students. I can see that it is helping my daughter learn piano and understand it more than just using the practice book.

This book was recommended by our piano teacher together with the other Piano Adventures books. It has been a great tool for him. It is helpful to be able to work at the appropriate pace for each skill but would be nice to have it all in one book so he didn't have to shuffle between 4 different books. The approach to learning notes and playing is wonderful.

After teaching piano for over 10 years, the Faber Piano Adventures series has become my go-to for almost every student. It teaches things very logically and at a great pace. My one complaint would be all of the cheesy words to the songs. It's super distracting for a lot of my students, and completely not necessary, as learning to play piano is difficult enough without trying to sing words at the same time. Just a small complaint, though. Otherwise, I love this series and plan to continue to use them.

I've taught piano lessons for 15+ years and was thrilled when I found this series. The songs are fun and interesting, and my students love learning. It seems to go at a quick pace so you'll be out of the Primer level and into the next one quickly.

I ordered this for my 7 year old daughter who is beginning piano lessons on the advice of her teacher. She loves these books.What we like:1) They are visually-interesting without being overwhelming.2) As a parent, I can generally understand what is being asked of the student even though I don't play piano.3) My daughter loves to practice.4) The price is very reasonable.Win-Win-Win-Win!

My daughter tried a sample lesson at a big music company that claimed all the books and materials were supplied to us and that's why the price was so (ridiculously) high...at the sample lesson they told us to buy these books--that's not all included so we are waiting for a place with cheaper lessons to start up and in the mean time my daughter is gaining great knowledge anf skill from these books.

It is what it is. basic piano book. Arrived very quickly and my kids use it with their piano lessons

I started reading this book and got to a place quite early on where I just gave up. I picked it up a couple of weeks later, and pretty soon I GOT IT. And once I got it, I couldn't put it down again. I hated being taken away from it, it enthralled me. I will read this book again, and will get more from it, and again and get even more. It is complex, strange and totally unique and one of the best reading experiences I have ever had. Thank you, Mariam.

Characters or real people? Fact or fiction? The lines and spaces this author draws can leave you gasping for reality. Not a catogorizable book. Highly recommended.

This has become one of my favorite books and I'm looking forward to re-reading it some day. This book is full of little twists and turns but none of them feel contrived. The first few pages had me thinking I was in for some kind of conformist dystopia only to take a turn into a surreal world within a world. The book tip toes between fact and fiction and its sometimes hard to see what's real and what isn't. The ending left me with many unanswered questions, but at the same time happy to leave them that way. Really though, even after the 700 or so pages this book leaves you with more questions than answers, but the questions don't feel likes holes in the story. This book is long and there are many characters to keep track of but in the end it is so worth it. Once I really got into this it was impossible to put down.

As with all Russian novels, I was overwhelmed by the vast breadth of The Gray House. Pin pointing my emotions first include, being mesmerized, sickened, fascinated, questioning and confused. Exhausted. Addicted. Ponderous. Poetry. Intense. Thought provoking. Obtuse.If anyone says they understand this novel, I wouldn't believe them. It took the author 18 years to write and with all the symbolism, nuances and themes I don't believe even she could remember all the details without an extensive chart. In my first read through, I made over 145 notes. In an 800 page book I would usually make around 20 notes, so Petrosyan definitely made a herculean story.One of my remaining questions after reading the synopsis and the entire book remains, is the House sentient? Are we meant to have a definite answer? Probably not. Black, who still struggles with his identity around Sphinx indicates the House's draw was more imagination than reality. But, he's a biased witness.I've seen many reviews comparing The Gray House to other authors, and I agree one cannot help but see Lord of the Flies, Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan and the stream of conscience moments like The Sound and The Fury. Some even say it could be seen as Harry Potter's Hogwarts - though I would disagree with that one. There is even a reference to 1984 with Big Brother. Even so, The Gray House is a stand alone.What I wish I'd had while reading was a list of some of the main characters, just to give me some anchors in the maelstrom novel. With any luck this small list will be of help.Smoker: He has been in the Pheasants, the predictable (accountant type), steady tribe, however, he has been kicked out because he dared to wear red shoes. (Very Ayn Rand where the individual is the important one compared to the collective.) Smoker is the character I feel like I most relate to because he is always asking questions. He is also the innocent character, who is forced into losing his innocence. He hadn't realized he was being cynical at the time.Tabaqui the Jackal: He is part court fool, part philosopher and all collector of oddities. Another character advises Smoker to listen to Tabaqui because he tells the truth - and he does, it's just been rolled in beads, feathers and guano before being presented to the audience. He is probably my second favorite character.Blind: He is seen as the leader of the House. Even though he is part of fourth, he has another role over all the tribes, though not talked about directly. Blind eats the plaster of the House to have it become a part of him. He is the best argument for the House being sentient. Blind is also able to move between realities. He occupies the forest as well as the House. Blind shows very little emotion. He carries out the Law dispassionately. He changes the Law when it suits him, after his contrived encounter with Gaby. He is the most disappointed when the Leaders don't conform to following him into a different reality at the end of the year. He is the Peter Pan of the lost boys, he cannot grow up.Noble: He is seen as handsome, and noble. Like the other children in the home he struggles with many issues, but when he is taken from the House and later returned his personality has changed. Noble moved from a strong character to a passive character. He serves as proof of the affects of being on the Outside, like a morality play for the observers. I thought Noble seemed like a decent person the way he treated Smoker.Sphinx: At one time he tortured Noble, which is why Noble was so fast at moving without his wheelchair. He was a Jumper between realities. Sphinx is said to have been given a choice that no one else had been given. Smoker resented him for being given a choice. Black tried to emulate Sphinx, and also came to resent him. Sphinx seems the most closely associated with Blind.Black: He had been under Sphinx in the heirarchy in the fourth. When the Dog tribe lost their leader he changed tribes, to become their new leader. It made it so that he and Sphinx were no longer at each others' throats. He was seen as a black sheep by Smoker, and so, Smoker felt like he could relate to Black when all the others were acting crazy. Black seems like a realist by the end.Grasshopper: Though not a main character, he acted as a foil to Blind. He seems to maintain his innocence, because of his youth. He is the only one who liked Wolf, while all the others see Wolf as one of the most depraved.Ralph or R One: He is the poor councilor who knows more than the other adults. Ralph is also a nickname, one he didn't like. He wondered how the kids knew he was coming back, when he had barely decided and saw his name written on the walls like a message board. He recognizes the graphite as a source of news in the House. He worries and frets over what may happen based on previous graduations. Weirdly bewildering, deeply emotional and eerie. I started the book thinking it was one thing, then it started going somewhere else and, incredibly, I was OK with it, instead of feeling cheated or exploited I went along with it. The translation is something else, a masterpiece as deserving of praise as the author herself.

Technically correct, but completely missing the mark. I think the description given for the French addition is much more accurate (all credit and mistakes go to Google Translate):In the house, you will lose your bearings, your name and your life before. In the house, you will know love, you will experience fear, you will discover places that you do not suspect exist, and even when you are alone, it will never really be the case. In the house, you will reach your eighteen years transformed forever and frightened at the thought of having to leave her.Bewitching evocation of Adolescence, is a song of love at this ungrateful and blessed age, its exaltations and tragedies, the feeling of frustration and all-powerfulness that crosses it. Mariam Petrosyan has managed to create a motley universe, alive and realistic, imbued with this nostalgia and wonder.I should not have liked this book. It is one of those stories where the author explains nothing, and where you immediately feel like you're missing some critical piece of the puzzle. That normally makes me crazy, but what saves it is that most of the characters are in the same situation. Some know there's something inexplicable happening, others have no clue, and a few actually know what's going on. As the book progresses, more is made clear, relationships make more sense, and the savvy reader can start to put some things together. Oddly enough, not everything is explained in the end, and that seemed to fit the story also. Many loose ends are tied up, but much like life, not all it's mysteries are solved.This is the only book in my life where when I finished it, I immediately turned to the front to begin rereading it. Once I knew it's secrets, reading it again is an almost entirely different experience. Nuances, characters, seeming non sequiturs become meaningful. The story itself is a mix of the mundane, of adolescent relationships, and a fine thread of magic that weaves underneath and through the story.I also enjoyed the characters. There is wide variety, and most are complex, some enigmatic, and very few fit the basic tropes seen in so many stories. I don't know if that's because of possible Russian cultural influences, or if the author is just that imaginative. Truly, this is one of those books that will stick with me for a long time. I just recommend you stick with it if you don't understand quite what's happening. Give it time. Like many things in life, you can't rush it.

Julian’s book methodically walks us through how sound, speaking and listening, influence our lives, both positively and negatively. This is a great read for anyone that is looking to improve their communication skills, whether it be for personal or professional reasons. I am involved in Leadership Training and find many in the business world have communication skills that have atrophied in today's digital environment of e-mails, IMs, and texts. If you are someone who is looking to improve these critical skills, this is the book for you.

I would not be exaggerating to say this book changed my life. I had seen Julians TED talk and wanted to learn more. one of my main issues was that I always felt like I was not being heard and was frequently talked over . This lead to a number of communication issues especially in high pressure situations .I picked up the audio book and was floored . this book is masterfully written and the suggestion Julian makes all work they are not puff pop psychology they are legitimate skills that can turn you into the person in the everyone listens to in the room. These skills take practice especially avoiding the deadly sins of speech but the results are incredible.I was able to obtain employment in a customer facing role that I was woefully under qualified for, the interviewers all felt that at the end of the day they I was the one they kept coming back too. They said my communication was the most memorable.This book will improve your life. I also recommend Amy Cuddy's Presence . This book mention her and I followed up from there.

Reading this clearly shows that Julian is a very experienced and professional listener and speaker. I watched most of his amazing speeches and in book he reveals what he does to bring it over the right way. Lots to learn, practice and experience. Love it!

Love his routine to do before a speech. Very easy to follow. Some of it is not super useful, but interesting throughout.

I don't like to read informational books especially professional text books. Usually the writers of the books fail to remember that those of us reading them are at the beginning level of the profession which makes them hard to read. This book however is easy to read, formatted, organized, and written well and has a lot of useful information for those going into a health profession management position.

The first few chapters are written a bit theoretically. But the author then moves into clear presentation and applies management principles specifically to the healthcare field.

Easy to grasp all the concepts.

We borrowed a bunch of Manga Classics from the library and The Scarlet Letter and Les Mis were my Grade 2 daughter's favorites. I read the books with them to discuss the faith and character issues. Included in the back are the artist and the writer's explanation on how they break down the novel into a manga format and translated the original ideas into drawings. What I love from these Manga Classics is that they didn't rewrite the content but pulled actual passages from the original text and added minor changes to make the storyline flow.

A good retelling of the highlights from the Scarlet Letter. The art provides a good visual for a kid to reflect on after having read the story. The art for Wilson is very telling as well; he looks like the lout I always saw him as.

An American classic makes an excellent manga!

I loved it! Though to be fair I haven't read the original book

I read the original Scarlet Letter years ago. It's a good book, but not my favorite "classic." While looking for books to include in my high school American history curriculum (google Guest Hollow), I decided to go with this version instead of the original. The Scarlet Letter is a difficult read... and for students with an already heavy reading load, it could frankly be a chore to slog through due to the writing style and antiquated language (imo).I LOVE this manga adaptation. The artwork is so expressive, and the symbolism of the book was carefully captured in the drawings. Of course some threads from the story had to be removed (or condensed), but the main details of the story were faithfully reproduced, and a lot of care went into creating something true to the original (as much as you can in a 300+ page manga comic). I also appreciate the author's notes that explain some of the metaphors and other details.This is the perfect book not only for a reluctant reader, but also for an adult who wants a quick education in the classics without the time or interest to read the original(s). It also would make a good accompaniment to any original classic to help a teen better understand an original work (perhaps read one of the books in this series first, and then read the original). I devoured this book in one sitting and thoroughly enjoyed it. I will be looking for the rest of the books in this series!

This is definitely a five star book for me, because of the wonderful craftsmanship that went into the drawings and the scrupulous attention to detail needed to adapt this novel into a manga.I'm less of a fan of the story itself, because of all the emphasis on "morality" and religion that permeate it. There's a lot of hypocrisy and harshness in the Puritan community in the book, with little to no Christian, or indeed any other, kindness towards one's fellow man. The townspeople are evil, hiding behind piousness, and this is illustrated in the drawings by the black shadow-like masks that fall on their faces, and that of Hester's estranged husband.Hester Prynne is kind, brave and strong, a wonderful heroine. She takes responsibility for her mistakes and is steadfastly loyal to her partner in sin, whose name she refuses to give up.The minister, on the other hand, is a coward and a weakling. He does nothing to help his child or the woman he had an affair with.Hester's husband is at times drawn almost like the devil himself, face half in shadows and hair blowing wild behind him. He is also often depicted with a big scary snake. A biblical reference maybe to the snake that enticed Eve, and through Eve, Adam into sin.The letter A, symbolizing first Hester's sin and later her penitence & kindness, is always colored in red, even though the rest of the illustrations are in black&white. We are never allowed to forget that it is there, nor is she.Pearl is a strange child, in part due to her unusual and isolated upbringing. This is very well reflected in the way she is drawn and the scenes she is depicted in. A beautiful example is when she lurks behind the trees, with the sunbeams shining through the forest, instead of running towards her mother and the minister even though her mother repeatedly calls out to her.
