Though this is a total work of fiction, even comprising of some sci-fi elements, the profound message of black self-hatred is powerfully REAL...so real that it brought me to tears as I reflected on my own troubling childhood experiences involving the conflicts that my dark skin provoked. I don't think that some situations in the book to exemplify Black self-hatred were too extreme (such as the case of Eternity in her first life...) and I don't think that Black America is too far from such a fate. We are slowly BUT SURELY getting there!! Kola Boof could not have illustrated this destructive phenomenon that is destroying our community any better. This book should be required reading for EVERY social studies class in Black classrooms. It will be hard and agonizing for us to discuss, let alone to simply read, but that's only because most of our community is guilty of possessing this destructive mentality (whether consciously or unconsciously). But we must confront and tackle this issue before this issue ultimately destroys us...The main character Eternity is a beautiful, proud, confident, dignified, and accomplished woman. Eternity represents the opposite of how our community and society in general views darkskinned Black women, which makes her tale all the more fascinating and inspiring. Ms. Kola Boof could not have produced a better vessel to deliver her message. And she could not have been any more bold with it either!
Ms. Boof creates a world that you need to look into, if not dwell within. This is a world where connotations and associations with darkness, melanin, Blackness, Afri-skinned or Afrocentricity are profoundly POSITIVE, not negative. Even for those who believe that they are evolved, informed, and self-loving: you really have no idea of how a novel can read -- how a world can look -- when "The Creator" loves Black skin as much as Ms. Boof does. Forget what you've heard; read her for yourself. See what LOVING Black/Blackness REALLY looks like. I'll bet you'll surprise yourself at what you discover in the privacy of your home, library, reading nook, or park bench. I read this book on a cruise and really had the hardest time putting it down. I felt embraced and very warmly regarded. Moreover, Ms. Boof can write. I very much appreciated her style of exposition and plot development. I will be back for her newest and latest works. Her love of Blackness is just what the doctor ordered ... for those of us who need an infusion in a world that bombards you with images, statistics, and stories trumpeting Black negativity and dysfunction.
I think this is a great sci fi book, but I also think every Black girl should read it. I felt like I was reading about myself: it seems like Kola is the only writer that has been able to fully express what its like being born into a world that loves white/light skinned and mixed Black women. I could relate to main characters disgust, contempt, despair and hatred for the society and the pathetically selfish people that pretend that everything is normal. I've always known that there was something wrong in the world but I couldn't quite explain it. Kola totally gets it, though and shows you just how abnormal society is and how disconnected it is from any nourishing energy. Kola's writing cuts through all the bologna: she dissects the concepts of beauty, race , "God", love and community. I think this book is great young Black women because Kola shows you through her character, Eternity, the mindset you need to create some space between society and yourself. Great book!SPOILERS AHEAD!What I loved most about Eternity was how she realized she didn't need anybody to validate her worth. She stops believing she should be flattered by being an exotic trophy and rejects half assed forms of love. Truly refreshing. I love how Eternity realizes that despite being rejected by society, that rejection has also given her absolute freedom over her life and she no longer has to compromise her beliefs. I thought the character Sea Horse was both charming and tragic. Like Eternity, I found myself attracted to him but also repulsed by him: he regards women as his property and like most Black men he's still obsessed with whiteness. He has a lot of power but his inability to control his need keep and sex as many women as possible, especially non-Black women, was ultimately his undoing. His obsessions and his lack of self worth were destructive and I really wish Eternity would just stay away from him. I found myself getting angry at Sea Horse's wife because she was so blindly devoted to him: reminded a lot of own mother, aunts etc. and how they accept ill treatment from their spouses in the name of "love".
Picked this up after I had bought Diary of a Lost Girl, this is a very entertaining novel with action and a storyline that is believable and makes a great addition to my collection. The heroine of the story is Eternity a young African hellcat who goes through some amazing adventures to find out what happened to Stevedore and gets to find out about cloning going on through first working at an African clinic, then she gets involved with Sea Horse and goes on to become the best heroine she could be. Lots of plot twists and interesting characters help it stay fun and informative from the start, the ending is perfect and makes the book one of my favorites. So for now until I can get caught up on the other books by Kola Boof this one has to be my favorite. Recommended...Aryan Somers
