Like John Carroll's other work, this book is excellent! It has clear, well-labeled illustrations that make the concepts and instructions easy to understand. This book really breaks down the house-building process into steps that are easy to comprehend. Unlike some other books, it does not over-simplify the process by just presenting a single textbook-like scenario, but actually addresses the real-life issues one might encounter when building a house.
Excellent illustrations. Very comprehensive. I already have a handful of home building books, but I didn't hesitate to add this one to the others. The information may not be new, but the clear diagrams are worth the cost
I think this is the BEST book for the common handyman. Shows all aspects of home construction. I bought my first copy in 2003 when I was designing a house for my husband and I to build. He had a lot of skill (not a carpenter, but a lot of general skill) and he referred to the book several times during construction for some professional help. I just bought another copy for my son who is building a garage on his own.
great book for beginners who have no experience. The fact that it is visual helps beginners see the project,rather than using a bunch of terms they cannot follow without actually, doing the job.
Really good content very informative. If you are a person with no construction knowledge this is the book for you.
I suspect that if someone who hasn't built anything had this book, an unskilled helper, and a knowledgeable friend to call once in awhile, he could construct a decent house.
This book is well written so a novice can understand the entire building process, but I believe that the professional will also benefit from reading this book.
I actually enjoyed reading this book a lot. I liked how it had all the visuals and I think its great for anyone looking to build or design their own home.
