Review
"Playfully told with succinct text and illustrations, this tale will appeal to a wide audience. It is both simple and sophisticated with subtle and not-so-subtle levels of irony…Once again McDermott proves his visual and storytelling mastery."—School Library Journal, starred review"This is a tightly focused tale with a great payoff; playful, spirited Monkey comes out on top while devious and dimwitted Crocodile is left hungry, and listeners are certain to cheer for the cheeky primate’s final victory."—The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

I'm a retired Art, GED, and History Teacher and all of his books are precious documentaries of legends and stories of many of the world's peoples, including many of the American Indian Nations, as well as African and South American ones. The first of his books I bought, ARROW TO THE SUN was for my children when small. Arrow to the Sun was an American Indian tale of how a boy without a father, who was laughed at in the vllage, found his Father with the help of a Medicine man. It is a reminder if what Jesus might have gone thru as a child. Monkey, a story from India, tells how someone puny and weak can oftimes can outwit a stronger more powerful enemy. Papagayo, saves the sun, All these have the same theme: by using your smarts you can outwit stronger foes everytime.McDermott's use of painted, cut, colorful paper patterns and designs true to the ethinic and cultural style of each subject has continued with each book- almost all receiving high literary honors! Visual arts are so important for us all.And the history and culture of all the people we now come into contact with is becoming even more a necessity to know, so we don't misunderstand and hate each other.
Beautiful imagery. Excellent story. The words are perfectly complex and simple for a toddler. I have the entire collection and my son loves them.
Returned this because I thought it would scare my kids. It's about an alligator trying to eat a monkey's heart. I think it was translated from another language, because it is just a little off.
READ dog goes to Kindergarten. Useful to read to them
Great short story with fun pictures
Students love this book. They re-tell the story with excitement and write about and illustrate their favorite parts with little prompting.
