As others have alredy noted, Moon’s Norway travel guide is excellent in every respect. For travellers such as my wife and I who ordered it specifically to take on our recent two-week trip to Norway, it has to be, without exception, the best of the best. Though we purchased and took with us several other volumes, this was the one to which we turned, over and over again, when we wanted information on any of the many places which we visited. Comparisons can often be unfair but they should not be in the case of guide books. Moon Norway never skimped on details; other volumes did again and again. One comparison will suffice: DK Eyewitness Travel’s Norway is, as always, beautiful and truly gorgeously illustrated but it is relatively worthless unless one plans on spending one entire vacation in Oslo and the surrounding region. Fully half of that volume is devoted to the capital area. Other places get short shrift. Stavanger in the south gets all of two pages as does Tromso in the far north. Trondheim does eke out 4 (out of a book of nearly 300 pages). Moon Norway, on the other hand, has 15 pages devoted to Stavanger, 18 to Tromso, and a whopping 26 to Trondheim! Such parallels might continue all day. The bottom line is simple: If you want the best and most detailed volume on the market today about Norway, buy this volume. It may not have as many pretty pictures (though it has a good many that are on a par with volumes like the DK one) but it offers details not readily available elsewhere and that is what a guide book, hopefully, should be all about. David Nikel, the author, has done a bang-up job with his text. We are already deep into its pages as we plan a second trip in the year ahead.
“Moon Norway†may be one of the best travel guides I have purchased. Written by David Nikel, a man who has actually lived in Norway, this book provides a wealth of information. Whether you are traveling on land or are cruising Norway, you will find a significant amount of useful tips. Not only does David Nikel cover major cities you may visit, he also provides information about some of the smaller towns and areas cruise ships visit. This is a major difference from the Rick Steves’ book about Northern European ports that addressed only a few of the major ports, but provided little other useful information. Of particular interest to the traveler are the sections titled “Background†and “Essential Informationâ€.Unlike many travel guides “Moon Norway†has more text and maps than photographs. The book does not waste your time providing hotel and restaurant specifics which is a welcome difference for those who are cruising or traveling with an organized tour group.I will be watching for other Moon travel guides as this company seems to produce guides that are practical and informative.
I compared this to Lonely Planet's guide before making my decision and chose this for something very simple: David's book warned me that one campground added on what I consider an exorbitant fee for cleaning their rental cabin, a fee that was not mentioned in the other guide. Good warning. However, what stopped me from giving this book five stars was the complete omission of Narvik -- it's not even listed in the index. Without searching the book for a reason, I have no idea why. Since Narvik played a large role for the British forces in WWII, I assume there is a museum and more info there, but perhaps not. Will search alternative sources.
Anyone interested in exploring Norway should check out this guidebook! It is comprehensive, up-to-date, and well written and will help you plan a trip that fits your needs and interests. It's almost overwhelming how much information there is, but the organization throughout each section makes it easy to find what you're looking for. I know I will definitely be using this book to plan my next trip to Norway!
I wanted to find a book that described the Norway cruise ports for my upcoming cruise. Most of the reviews of other books claimed that there was very limited coverage of the Norway ports especially since most of the books include Northern Europe and the ports on the Baltic Sea. This book is much more extensive than the cruise ports but there was a lot of content for every port my cruise will be sailing to: Bergen, Flam, Geiranger, Alesund and Stavanger. I already found and booked a tour in Geiranger that was not offered by my cruise based on this book. A great buy!
Easy to read, with good advice. We wanted to travel to Kirkenes which is not covered in the book, but the info on the other cities was very informative.
We really like this series of books and this one did not disappoint.
Gift for a friend who will be visiting Norway this spring. Book is very informative
