This flight attendant's diary wound up being a great resource for understanding the airline industry, why certain rules are in place, and the dynamics of airline travel before and after "9-11." The latter subject, covered in the last chapter, gives us the reasons for the changes made on account of drastically reduced airline tickets. It makes you a bit more aware of what we passengers should not be complaining about when we fly. Our reduced ticket prices hold the answer to that one.Though I was slightly put off by the author's ageist references, as well as her superficial observations about the appearance of her passengers and others, her candid views also shed light on her own motivations and aspirations. You're getting as honest a description of her life as a flight attendant, which, after reading the book, makes one realize that those who do that job and stay with it have to be doing it for the LOVE of travel. It has to be, since the lifestyle itself - as described in Poole's book - is often difficult, at best. Fun anecdotes about difficult passengers are a pleasure read about - because you are grateful that YOU didn't choose the profession of flight attendant!The miseries of dealing with the physical ailments associated with the job, always being hungry, inconsistent hours, skewed sleep schedules, sketchy living places and spaces for flight attendants, as well as some of the passengers - which can be an even bigger pain - would discourage most of us. The pay isn't even that great!Most useful are Heather's tips about blocked ears (common malady during an airline's descent), turbulence, airport security, and what to communicate and to whom, if you want to change seating, etc. If nothing else, "Cruising Altitude" will have you more empathetic to your flight attendants next time you travel the friendly skies.
This book was fascinating to read at the start when the reader learns what it's like to become a flight attendant. Later on, though, the tale fizzles into day-to-day activities that, frankly, aren't very interesting. The reader senses that the author was stretching for more pages without material to fill them, then gave up and ended abruptly. Still, if curious about flight attendant life, this book will answer your questions.
This was a fun peek into the world of flight attendants. From the training to the plane, Poole describes her adventures and kooky incidents with passengers. I was kept interested throughout the stories and yet there was nothing really "groundbreaking" about the book. Written well, this is an easy read and entertaining.The one thing I was waiting for, which was never covered, was how to deal with those who have fear of flying. Although she did a great section on turbulence, I wanted to hear if there was certain ways they handled the FoF crowd, as I used to be one of them!
Since 9/11 I have never enjoyed flying, not for being afraid but for the sheer misery of having to deal with all facets of the ordeal. If not for the time factor I would much rather drive to anywhere with roads then go through the horrible experience of dealing with anything connected to modern day traveling by air. I have had vacations spoiled by flights home after a great period of fun and relaxation on land.Anyway, when I started to read this very entertaining and enlightening book I had a really hard time putting I down. I literally didn’t want it to end! The writing is wonderfully funny at times and guaranteed to make one shake their heads in amazement at the shenanigans of crazy passengers and how flight attendants must continually come up with ingenious solutions to the mayhem that all too often erupts. And the insights into the experiences of the flight crew while not flying was very entertaining and somewhat enlightening as well.When I read this book, I found out there are indeed many new things under the sun... certainly more than just the outward appearance of a lot of tubes being pushed through the sky.For me the whole experience was wonderful!
This was a fun, easy read about the trials and tribulations of being a flight attendant. My flying days are over, but I enjoyed reading this book about air travel through the eyes of a flight attendant. Mostly I wondered why anyone would want to be one. It looks very glamorous to the casual observer, but since most people exhibit their worst characteristics under conditions that are less than ideal, one quickly realizes that flight attendants come in for more than their share of abuse.They have a dangerous, difficult job. We are fortunate that there are people willing to perform it. I'm glad I'm not one of them.
Cruising Attitude was a fast, fun, enjoyable read. It covers Heather Poole's efforts to get a job as a flight attendant, and goes into the rigorous training and the early years of very low wages, shared living quarters and unpredictable schedules. She talks a lot about her in-flight experiences with demanding passengers, and a little bit about her travels and bad dates. Near the end of the book she writes briefly about the impact of 9/11. I enjoyed every word of this entertaining book!
