This has to be the best guide book, hands down, that I've ever bought (and I've bought many excellent ones). It has been painstakingly researched by expert authors, and the information is quite detailed and well organized. I would think that it would be useful for any visitor to Death Valley. For the day tripper, it will provide useful tips about what to see in a brief period and interesting details about the small amount of the park you'll see. For people like me who are planning a return long vacation to the park, it's perfect. My prior visits to the park would have been much more efficient and fulfilling if I'd had this book, and it gives me a wealth of ideas about areas to explore during upcoming and probably many future trips. For the serious overlander, I would think that this guide is essential. The detailed mileage indicators, descriptions of roads, descriptions of hikes, geological or historical information about every site in the park, and wealth of other information make this guide indispensable for me.
I originally bought this book when I first scheduled our trip at about six months prior. It had so much detail that it was overwhelming, at first - given that I knew absolutely nothing about the valley. I tucked it away, feeling that I probably wouldn't use it. HOWEVER, by the time we got on the trip and had a sense of where we were going, it was absolutely indispensable! We couldn't wait to plan each day's journey. The book was beautifully laid out with maps and routes. Of the three books that we purchased for this trip, it was always the first we reached for from the car floor. It told us about sites that we wouldn't have known about otherwise. It's a great resource for both the first time and the returning traveler. If you're only going for a day or two, I would skip it...but if you're planning on an extended visit, this book is a tremendous guide.

This book provides a great deal of interesting commentary. The distances between points in and around Death Valley are great, per the NPS, Scotty's Castle is 53 miles from Furnace Creek. _The Explorer's Guide to Death Valley National Park, Second Edition_ will give you interesting facts and features nearly every step of the way and keep you entertained the entire trip.This book will be your constant companion. It is well worth the small cost to purchase!!
This book is a great resource tool. A fairly inclusive area guide with historical, geological and physical details. There are very few locality specific guides available for plant identification. This book has a fairly detailed plant section without falling into the text book category.I purchased this book for helping us plan a 5 day stay in Stove Pipe Wells. Well worth the money spent.
