I am a longtime fan of Kendra Tierney’s blog, which I have read almost since its inception and which helped me on my path of reversion to the Catholic faith, so I preordered this right away. Lots of times, books by bloggers are mostly blog material repackaged, but I decided that was fine - it’s good to have liturgical suggestions in order, in a book, and I am glad to support writing I have been receiving for free. But the Compendium, as I am going to affectionately call it, is a lot more than blog posts. She offers ideas about how to teach kids difficult concepts, brief histories of saints’ lives and legends, and fun feast celebration activities. Plus, I actually laughed out loud. I read the whole thing in an evening, because it was entertaining and edifying - and it would be for a well-catechized Catholic or someone who’s never heard the word “Triduum.†Bonus: amazingly simple list of indulgences in an appendix. Double bonus: It didn’t make me feel awful that we don’t already do everything, but inspired that I could handle adding ideas. Highly recommended
Sometimes being Catholic feels like a secret society. All the rules are in the CCC but traditions! You hear things but you are not really sure what is what. No more! Everything is here in a comprehensive, chronological, but also approachable, relatable way and thoroughly sourced so you know it is actually authentic not hearsay. Love it! This volume will be within grabbing distance all year long. Thank you for writing this for us all!
I think I’ve read every book out there about living the liturgical year with your family, but this one is the first one that made me feel like “Hey! I can do this! And in a big way!†Written in her funny down to earth style, she goes in depth into the liturgical year (Advent and Christmas are 117 pages!), explaining both the feasts and how to celebrate them and gives examples from her own family life. The best part? She also gives ways to celebrate these feasts with shortcuts for those seasons where it may be tough to cook everything from scratch. An excellent and worthwhile read. I can’t wait for Advent this year!
I thought it was beautiful and fitting that the book was to be released on October 7, feast of the Holy Rosary... and I was disappointed with each passing day that amazon failed to deliver it...but with the finesse of detail that only comes from heaven, it arrived on our doorstep on Nov 1, All Saints Day...and what could be more fitting and proper for this book. 😠Saints beget Saints. This book is exactly what I needed in my life. It's what I've been searching for and it's finally here. Kendra is INCREDIBLY creative and has such an amazing sense of humor AND such a strong connection to her Catholic faith. I absolutely adore her ideas of engaging her large family in living their lives liturgically with so many recipes and activities to bring the saints and feast days to life. I will be forever grateful for Kendra's creativity and even more so that she shared so much of it in this book! My prayer is that I can follow along in the liturgical year and make some meaningful (and delicious) memories with my daughters who will continue on with these beautiful traditions with their families one day.Just buy this book! And buy another for your best friend!
Kendra's blog Catholic All Year is the go-to for all things Liturgical Living. Her new book is an essential handbook for bringing the rhythm of the Church year into your home or classroom. Walking through the Seasons, it includes ideas for prayer, song, food, decor, and activities to magnify the beauty and tradition of being Catholic. I love that it is written with the characteristic intelligent humor that you get from Kendra on her blog and other social media, making it both informative and entertaining to read. I think any Catholic (or interested non-Catholic) could pick this up and find a wealth of ideas to add into the cadence of everyday life to enhance their prayer and practice of the faith. Personally, as a single Catholic woman, I like that many of the books suggestions work for households of different kinds and aren't dependent on having young kids to celebrate with. It's very inspiring and a great resource for Catholic school teachers and DREs too!
This would be a great book for a homeschooler or early education teacher - lots of great ideas to teach little kids about the church calendar.I was really hoping for more discussion of traditional observances of feast days from various cultures around the world. Not to say this book didn’t contain a decent amount of information regarding those, but you really have to sift through a lot of crafts and kiddie snacks and parades and games to find it.I found the writing style much too chatty and casual. I think a lot of excerpts were taken in part from the authors bog, so I guess it’s to be expected. It’s a writing style that is more suited to short excerpts than to a “compendiumâ€.
I love this book! I’ve been following Kendra’s blog for many years now and was so excited when she announced her book, and it was even better than I’d hoped! She has an amazing sense of humor and offers great practical advice to incorporating more of the rich traditions of the Church and celebrations of so many feast days into normal, crazy family life. She includes saint feasts both ancient (Catherine of Alexandria, St. John the Baptist) and modern (St John Paul II, St Gianna Molla, St. Teresa of Calcutta), so you get both a rediscovery of old celebrations and get to be part of the process for creating new ones. This book will be one of my “go to’s†for years to come!
